The automobile roof rack has become a tool of choice for adventurous weekend warriors and road ready families with too much vacation cargo for the back on the minivan. They are a convenient way to leverage all of that space on top of a vehicle, keeping greasy bikes or extra luggage out of the trunk or cargo space of a car, SUV, or van. The gear or cargo is out of sight and out of mind. However, having gear such as an expensive bicycle, surfboard, or kayak loaded up on the roof of a vehicle and “out of mind” has often led to forgetful drivers pulling right into their home garage or other low-hanging obstacle and damaging the cargo, automobile, structure, or sometimes all three.

Denver based Evolution Media is the latest entrant into the market to solve this problem. While most of the solutions to prevent this catastrophe involve the physical placement of reminders in a garage or carport, Evolution chose to capitalize on the widespread popularity of Apple Computer’s iPhone to prevent drivers from damaging expensive equipment.

RackReminder is a location-based reminder application which runs on the iPhone’s iOS operating system. Once installed, users can enter multiple reminder addresses within the application and when leaving for a location with bikes or other gear on top of their vehicle, they notify the application of their intended destination. Upon arriving near the location, the app notifies the driver with both visual and audio alerts of the load on top of their car, SUV, or van.

“I actually developed the concept for this app because it was something that I needed: a reliable, inexpensive, and convenient way to prevent me from destroying another bike.” stated Nate Johnson, Evolution’s president and owner. “I say another because I’ve done it not once, but twice.”

After researching available products on the market which focus on this niche concern, Johnson decided that there was an entry point with a product which was inexpensive, but also didn’t require setting up any type of physical reminder. “I looked around and saw solutions that were either reliable and really expensive, or inexpensive but required adding some sort of physical reminder to your car or garage every time you leave.”

Johnson brought the concept to UK based Spudd Design, a firm specializing in mobile application development. After two months of intensive collaboration, RackReminder was developed and entered the Apple App Store on January 30th.

The company states that it is also in the process of developing an Android version of the application and that in the long run it wants the app to include alerts from its entire community of users. “The beauty of a digital solution to this problem,” said Johnson, “is that we can take all of the locations which users add to the software and make those location alerts available to every other user.”

In 2011, US production of mined gold and silver ore reached its lowest point in almost 20 years, but the US Gold and Silver Ore Mining industry achieved record-high revenue. This apparent contradiction reflects the power precious metal prices, which are traded on world financial markets, have on industry performance. Over the five years to 2012, gold prices and industry revenue are projected to climb at annualized rates of 19.5% and 17.4%, respectively. According to IBISWorld industry analyst Brian Bueno, “The increases have been driven by growing global demand from investors seeking a safe investment after the recent economic downturn.” In 2012, revenue is expected to jump an additional 11.8% to $ 14.8 billion as prices climb due to recessionary conditions in Europe and continued disappointment in the US economic recovery.

On the other hand, demand from jewelry manufacturing, the Gold and Silver Ore Mining industry’s primary domestic market segment, has decreased in recent years because of price increases and declining consumer demand. In fact, jewelry’s domestic share of industry revenue is currently down 10 percentage points from its level in 2009. Investment demand has grown tremendously, however, especially in the global market where investment demand in gold is almost 40.0%. Says Bueno, “As demand grows domestically and internationally, producers are attempting to boost production to take advantage of high prices.”

The six largest gold producing mine sites – Goldstrike, Eastern Nevada Operations, Bingham Canyon, Cortez, Twin Creeks and the Smoky Valley Common Operatio – are operated by the four largest players: Barrick Gold Corporation, Newmont Mining Corporation, Kennecott Utah Copper (Rio Tinto Group) and Kinross Gold Corporation. Concentration has increased in recent years, due to merger activity and increased production at some of the industry’s largest mines. The medium-high level of industry concentration reflects the relatively small amount of mineral resource locations, where the largest and highest-volume producing mines are controlled by a few large companies, and multiple firms often operate at the same mine establishments. Additionally, producers have an incentive to merge due to the cost benefits of having larger operations. Large producers also have greater capital availability necessary to invest in mine exploration and development. All these factors give major players an advantage, making it difficult for smaller firms to compete and lead some to consolidation. World’s best announced for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung

Olympic Gold medallists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton will head up a world class field for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung, taking place from 16-19 February 2012 at the Velodrome in the Olympic Park which doubles up as a London 2012 test event.

Today the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) revealed the full line up which will include five Olympic Champions and 16 World Champions including current Sprint World Champions Jason Kenny (Great Britain) and Anna Meares (Australia) and Robert Forstemann (Germany) who is currently ranked World Cup number one in Sprint and Team Sprint.

With riders eager to compete in the London 2012 venue, the event has attracted the world’s best track cyclists, as many nations compete for Olympic qualification. Over 23,000 spectators will enjoy the elite action as athletes ride competitively for the first time in the Velodrome.

340 riders from 48 nations and 18 trade teams will compete in the four day competition. Highlights include finals of the Men’s and Women’s Team Sprint on Friday, the ever exciting Team Pursuit and the tactical Keirin races.

LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans said of the event: “The standard of riders we have attracted is phenomenal with most of the world’s best riders participating. The athletes will be competing for the first time in the Olympic venue in front of thousands of fans so we are looking forward to an exceptional event. As well as it being a vital competition for the athletes, it is key for LOCOG in terms of our testing to ensure that we are ready at Games time. We will be testing the overall venue operations, the track, the timing and results and our workforce.”

Tickets for the event sold out within minutes when they went on sale last November. The iconic 6,000 seat Velodrome will host Olympic and Paralympic indoor track cycling events on the 250 metre track during the Games. After the Games the Velodrome will form part of a facility which will include a BMX Track, one-mile long road cycle circuit, 6km of off-road mountain bike tracks and storage for over 300 bikes.

The Tour Operators industry struggled in 2009, when industry revenue declined by 11.3% as the recession decimated demand. According to IBISWorld industry analyst and report author Nima Samadi, “the industry has turned the corner over the last few years, with tour operators’ revenue growing 4.0% and 2.1% in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The industry is expected to grow an additional 3.8% in 2012 to $ 3.8 billion. Nevertheless, the industry’s overall performance in the five years to 2012 will not be positive, with revenue decreasing at an average annual rate of 1.3%.”

As well as tough economic condition, including high unemployment and lower consumer spending, the industry has had to contend with falling domestic travel and international arrivals into the United States. In 2009, inbound travel declined, with 5.2% fewer people visiting the United States than in 2008. Domestic travel also declined 5.1% that year. With fewer people coming and going, tour operators’ revenue dropped. However, domestic and inbound travel rates have improved over the course of 2010 and 2011. In 2012, domestic and inbound travel are forecast to grow an additional 3.3% and 5.4%, respectively. Improving domestic and international travel rates have led to higher demand for tour operators’ services.

The Tour Operators industry is experiencing increased competition from consumers directly booking travel accommodations online. Many tourists, Samadi says, “want flexible tour packages and itineraries: more travelers desire self-discovery time in line with their own interests, which requires them to travel at a relaxed pace. Given this trend, the demand for niche and special-interest tours is rising, which often command a premium.”

This industry has a low level of concentration. The top four players are estimated by IBISWorld to capture les than 38% of the available market share in 2012. Industry major players include Flight Centre and The Mark Travel Corporation. Over the five years to 2017, high levels of concentration will put pressure on industry participants. Competition from internet-based transport and accommodation providers will compound this pressure. Industry operators are also anticipated to experience increasing demands from customers in relation to services and pricing. Industry consolidation is therefore expected to continue due to competitive pressures, and other travel firms will be acquired by larger players wanting to extend their geographical reach, increase brand name recognition, boost product offerings (e.g. by accessing limited-capacity destinations) and cut operational costs
