World’s Best Announced for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Presented by Samsung

World’s best announced for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung

(PRWEB) January 31, 2012

Olympic Gold medallists Sir Chris Hoy and Victoria Pendleton will head up a world class field for the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung, taking place from 16-19 February 2012 at the Velodrome in the Olympic Park which doubles up as a London 2012 test event.

Today the London 2012 Organising Committee (LOCOG) revealed the full line up which will include five Olympic Champions and 16 World Champions including current Sprint World Champions Jason Kenny (Great Britain) and Anna Meares (Australia) and Robert Forstemann (Germany) who is currently ranked World Cup number one in Sprint and Team Sprint.

With riders eager to compete in the London 2012 venue, the event has attracted the world’s best track cyclists, as many nations compete for Olympic qualification. Over 23,000 spectators will enjoy the elite action as athletes ride competitively for the first time in the Velodrome.

340 riders from 48 nations and 18 trade teams will compete in the four day competition. Highlights include finals of the Men’s and Women’s Team Sprint on Friday, the ever exciting Team Pursuit and the tactical Keirin races.

LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans said of the event: “The standard of riders we have attracted is phenomenal with most of the world’s best riders participating. The athletes will be competing for the first time in the Olympic venue in front of thousands of fans so we are looking forward to an exceptional event. As well as it being a vital competition for the athletes, it is key for LOCOG in terms of our testing to ensure that we are ready at Games time. We will be testing the overall venue operations, the track, the timing and results and our workforce.”

Tickets for the event sold out within minutes when they went on sale last November. LOCOG is making every effort to offer additional tickets to the event, and, if extra tickets can be made available, more information on this will be issued in the next few days on the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung website

The iconic 6,000 seat Velodrome will host Olympic and Paralympic indoor track cycling events on the 250 metre track during the Games. After the Games the Velodrome will form part of a facility which will include a BMX Track, one-mile long road cycle circuit, 6km of off-road mountain bike tracks and storage for over 300 bikes.

The UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung is supported by UK Sport’s World Class Events Programme. The schedule and full lists of teams and riders can be viewed on the UCI Track Cycling World Cup presented by Samsung rider list.

Bon Voyage: Tour Operators in the US Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

Bon Voyage: Tour Operators in the US Industry Market Research Report Now Updated by IBISWorld

IBISWorld Market Research

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) February 04, 2012

The Tour Operators industry struggled in 2009, when industry revenue declined by 11.3% as the recession decimated demand. According to IBISWorld industry analyst and report author Nima Samadi, “the industry has turned the corner over the last few years, with tour operators’ revenue growing 4.0% and 2.1% in 2010 and 2011, respectively. The industry is expected to grow an additional 3.8% in 2012 to $ 3.8 billion. Nevertheless, the industry’s overall performance in the five years to 2012 will not be positive, with revenue decreasing at an average annual rate of 1.3%.”

As well as tough economic condition, including high unemployment and lower consumer spending, the industry has had to contend with falling domestic travel and international arrivals into the United States. In 2009, inbound travel declined, with 5.2% fewer people visiting the United States than in 2008. Domestic travel also declined 5.1% that year. With fewer people coming and going, tour operators’ revenue dropped. However, domestic and inbound travel rates have improved over the course of 2010 and 2011. In 2012, domestic and inbound travel are forecast to grow an additional 3.3% and 5.4%, respectively. Improving domestic and international travel rates have led to higher demand for tour operators’ services.

The Tour Operators industry is experiencing increased competition from consumers directly booking travel accommodations online. Many tourists, Samadi says, “want flexible tour packages and itineraries: more travelers desire self-discovery time in line with their own interests, which requires them to travel at a relaxed pace. Given this trend, the demand for niche and special-interest tours is rising, which often command a premium.”

This industry has a low level of concentration. The top four players are estimated by IBISWorld to capture les than 38% of the available market share in 2012. Industry major players include Flight Centre and The Mark Travel Corporation. Over the five years to 2017, high levels of concentration will put pressure on industry participants. Competition from internet-based transport and accommodation providers will compound this pressure. Industry operators are also anticipated to experience increasing demands from customers in relation to services and pricing. Industry consolidation is therefore expected to continue due to competitive pressures, and other travel firms will be acquired by larger players wanting to extend their geographical reach, increase brand name recognition, boost product offerings (e.g. by accessing limited-capacity destinations) and cut operational costs

Fat Tire Bike Tours: Paris at Night

On my recent blog entry at Cockpit Chronicles, I wrote about the incredible time five pilots and a bunch of other interesting people had on the night bike tour offered by Fat Tire Bike Tours. Our guide, John from Houston was what made it outstanding. Even though he had his bike stolen only hours before the tour, he managed to give us a unique look into the city of Paris as only a Texan could. If you ever get the chance, I highly recommend taking one of these tours. They’re also offered in London, Barcelona and Berlin. Be sure to ask for John from Houston! 2011 US National Masters Track Champion Credits ElliptiGO for Strong Return to Running and Attempts Record-Setting Marathon

2011 US National Masters Track Champion Credits ElliptiGO for Strong Return to Running and Attempts Record-Setting Marathon

Ross, CA (PRWEB) December 14, 2011

2011 was a banner year for Brian Pilcher. After earning three medals at the World Masters Athletics Track and Field Championships, he won the U.S. National Masters Track Championship in both the 5,000 and 10,000-meters for men 55 – 59 and then clocked a record-setting 1:12:52 half marathon last month. Now his eyes are set on the Houston Marathon in January where he will make his first attempt to break the American record in the marathon for men 55 and older.

Pilcher exploded onto the Masters running scene just a few years ago and was named USATF and Running Times 2009 Runner of the Year for Men 50-54. His meteoric rise came to a screeching halt in March of 2010 when pain in his hips stopped him from running at all. Doctors determined that Brian had lost the cartilage in his hip and his pain was coming from the bones rubbing together. He underwent surgery to shave down the bones in both hips and anchor the labrum back in place. It was a success, but knee issues soon followed and Brian found himself unable to run for even five minutes. Frustrated with this new reality, Brian searched for alternatives and discovered the ElliptiGO.

Designed by runners, the ElliptiGO is the first outdoor fitness device specifically designed to emulate the running motion. It allows athletes of all levels to get a high-intensity workout without experiencing the repetitive impact of running. Healthy athletes and injured athletes alike have found it the most effective way to get an outdoor running experience without the usual pounding on their bodies, and it has quickly become the tool of choice for a number of 2012 Olympic hopefuls and competitive Masters runners.

For Brian, the key was that he didn’t feel his hip or knee pain when he rode the ElliptiGO, so he could get his training done even while injured. “I refused to sit and wait for fate to heal my knee; to run again,” he explains. “I enjoyed riding the ElliptiGO and it kept me healthy psychologically because I was able to get in a solid workout. That’s key for any athlete suffering from an injury.”

After several months of riding, it became clear that the benefits for Pilcher weren’t only psychological. His bodywork therapist, Anita Acevedo, began to notice significant changes in his body. “What truly amazed me was that his rib cage and upper torso became more upright and in alignment, and his core strength and posture dramatically improved,” Acevedo explained. “Structurally, the ElliptiGO helped Brian become stronger in both his legs and his lungs.”

“Brian Pilcher’s story really exemplifies what we hear from both recreational users and elite athletes every day,” said Bryan Pate, Co-Founder and Co-President of ElliptiGO. “The ElliptiGO allows them to get in a high-quality workout, but without the pain they’re accustomed to experiencing in high-impact activities. It’s particularly powerful as a unique way for former runners and injured athletes to exercise again with real intensity, which makes a profound impact on their quality of life.”

After thousands of miles on the ElliptiGO, Brian began to work running back into his life and the results were remarkable. Only nine weeks after being cleared to run again, he finished third overall in the Dipsea Race, one the nation’s most grueling trail races. The following month, Brian went on to earn three medals at the World Masters Athletics Track and Field Championships and became the 2011 U.S. National Track Champion in the 5K and 10K for men 55 – 59. “I had a huge base of miles on the ElliptiGO, which really helped maintain my fitness until I could heal enough to run competitively again,” Pilcher explained. “I’m eager to see how much more I can improve my times now that I’ve integrated the ElliptiGO into my training program.”

As if to prove his point, in November of 2011, Brian took 1st in his age group and 5th overall at the World Championships of Elliptical Biking, posting the fastest time ever for someone over 50. He followed that performance up with a 1:12:52 half-marathon, entering the record books with the 10th fastest half-marathon ever run by a 55-year old.

“We are so pleased to be an integral, ongoing part of Brian’s story and look forward to seeing what he will do at the Houston Marathon in January,” said Pate. “It looks like he’s got a really good shot at setting an American record in the marathon for his age group and I’m planning to be there to see him do it.”

The ElliptiGO is available for sale at http://www.elliptigo.com and at specialty bike or fitness stores in ElliptiGO’s national dealer network.

For more information about the company and its products visit the ElliptiGO website or follow them on Twitter @elliptigo and Facebook.
